Public Relations? Really?
How many people working in PR ever physically speak to any members of the publics they're trying to influence?

Day to day PR discussion, with a splatter of sarcasm, a whiff of ignorance and a sprinkle of self-promotion.

That's a very good quesion Richard. As you and I know, the answer's 'very few'.
OK, so consumer PR types will claim that they meet and talk to consumers all the time - and while that may be true, are they talking to the particular consumer audience that their clients are trying to reach?
Certainly when you move into the tech, B2B, corporate and financial PR sectors, the chances of agency account handlers meeting and talking to relevant publics on a regular basis are pretty slim. It's not always their fault, of course - in fact it rarely is. I've had plenty of clients that rarely meet the target audience, let alone their agency teams.
The thing is, when you do get to meet the audience, it's always an eye-opener...so it'd be good to try and do it a bit more.
Wouldn't that be marketing?
I follow the enthusiast message boards and sometimes I do ask specific questions of people I know who consume the product/service I am working on at the time. Nothing formal but I think PR really needs to keep that distance between the consumer but still be able to monitor the trend.
The ones who should be getting close to the consumer are the company executives, company policy and yes like the post before mine--the marketer.
